Is Our Food Safe
I recently read an article in TIME magazine that discussed the safety issues with our food in America. I have my own opinions about the article but I would like you to read it and let me know what you think, what is your opinion about what the author had to say. Click the following link to go to the article and post a comment about it on the blog.

This article is very poorly written. The writer is very biased against meat. Saying meat is bad and unhealthy for us. Why would we climb to the top of the food chain to eat just vegetables. It is not right. It is great that people are producing organic foods, but don’t take it out on the meat lovers like me!

its an OK, article but the only reason the prices are going up is because the cost of everything is going up. Its always going to rise and never going to stop in my opinion. It has been going up for a long time and has never seemed to slow down.
August 28th, 2009 at 7:54 am
the article was alright i guess
August 28th, 2009 at 7:56 am
I didnt like the article. It isint right that animals get treated that way in factory farms. We need to rethink ways to save our enviroment and land. No matter what people need to eat, and they will eat whatever is available to them.
August 28th, 2009 at 7:56 am
I did not like this article whatsoever. It is biased and very degrading to farmers of America. The authors ideals are not sensible at all. He thinks the way farmers raise animals and crops is absolutely horrible for us and our environment. Apparently he thinks we should all have a garden, a cow, a pig, and some chickens in our yards and produce our own organic food which is just unrealistic.
August 28th, 2009 at 7:58 am
i thought this article had quite a bit of truth to it and may help farmers raise livestock without the help of so many other drugs injected into them and grow crops without all the chemicals making the food healthier and help reduce the obesity problem america has
August 28th, 2009 at 7:58 am
I think this article was poorly written and was published to turn america agianst commercial food products and try to get us to switch to expensive and disgusting tasting organic food made by pot smoking hippies. The author only states one side of and argument sayin that theres an obesity problem but obbviously he hasnt seen me im nowhere near fat i eat wat i want whenever i want i have a fast matablism because ive always been active and played sports if these fat people went out and did something instead of sitting on there couch dieting and eating “organic” foods theyd have better results. THE END
August 28th, 2009 at 8:03 am
This article was really one sided article. They only really put why the people should eat organic food. My thought of everything is that the real thing is the only way to go. If everyone was active and excersise and actually do something people wouldnt be obesity. This article would probly be better if it was put together more adiquitly it would have been more fun to read and maybe I would actually want to read it.
August 28th, 2009 at 8:05 am
Most of the article is his opinion, he needs to add more facts. I did not like this article, because there is to much repetition and it over exagerates a little. The obesity problem isnt entirly caused by this, but he makes it sound like it is the only cause.
August 28th, 2009 at 11:55 am
California can keep their organic beef. I take a perfetly marbled steak any day. Mmm Mmm good. Not to mention the logistical impossiblity of feeding the masses under the organic method.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Franken this article is bogus! Farmers are not to blame for the obesity issue. Jernalist will go for any top story they can get its there job but they blamed the wrong person. Farmers are most likly to react violently to this. THIS WAS A HORRIBLE ARTICLE by meens of infomation.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
I really disliked this article. This person doesn’t k now what they are talking about. They want us all to start eating organic vegetables and give up meat. The article as all about what he thinks why not ask what some of the farmers think or at least get some more facts.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
First of all it is not expensive to be thin, its expensive to be obese. health teachers teach you to eat in moderation, and high protein is healthy for your heart and your body. And, you can say that eating fast food is very expensive.
Second, corn is a world sorce and most of our corn is for exports. many farmers would agree that going organic, with out pesticides and fertalizers would be more expensive than doing the present methods. Also if they were to go organic then the yeild of that crop would be so less, they might not be able to meet the demands of Americans.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
this article is going to affect alot of farmers
hi ag2 class
August 28th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
This article is interesting and brings up a point but it seems to be a bit stretched with its facts, i am not a farm but i think farmers were missed judged in this article. The article is right on one thing farmers should try to do better but not extreme like the article says they should.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
I do not agree with this article. not all farms are like that and the reason for them is not to get us fat but to be able to keep up with the growing population and the need for meat and crops to feed the world. Plus it is a proven fact that organic meat and food is less tasty then corn fed beef! in the 1800s what did cows eat? I guarentee you they didnt get just grass they got corn too. and as for fertilizers it is either that or the writer of this artice can come out and weed my 1000 acre farm for me. The point of fertilizer is to put needed nutrients back in the soil that the plants took out. and that happens with organic farms too. plus i thought protin was good for you not bad.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
this is a horrible article. the person that wrote it doesn’t know what they’re talking about. they should go out to a farm and see what actually goes on. and not criticize the farmers on how they raise animals and crops. and if they really want the so called healthy food they can do it themselves. because our farmers have been doing this for years and years with no problems. and it’s not the farmers fault that americans are gettign obese, it’s the americans that don’t eat it right. that is my opinion about this article.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
This article is mean to farmers and animals. They want to make us eat vegetable.
August 28th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I thought this artical was very poorly written. The idiots that wrote this artical probably got there info from one person and twisted parts of it. if they new how hard it is to work and care for a farm then they would have a different oppinion. They went to extreme in writting it. if there suggesting we go organic than they can come and weed our two thuosand acres of farmland then be my guest, otherwise they should keep there comments to there self. And the animals arent as crouwede as you think. and there animals they arent peolple so we shouldnt treat them like people. God made animals for a reason, and thats to eat them. So enjoy!!
August 28th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
This article is very very very very very very very very very stupid. We need our meat and if we have to pump them full of antibiotics so we dont fall over and die when we eat it so be it. The only reason animals are so “crowded” is because no one else is willing to put the effort into raising livestock. We have no problem with shoving people into factories and tight spaces but the second we do this to our animals we act like we’re all gonna die. I would be more worried about the effects of global warming (which is also stupid) than this…and that’s saying something.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
i think that this guy is so critical…..he tries to tell the world that baisically they are fat and lazy when he sits on his computer all day long and writes 5 pages of bologna. In my opinion we should not have to worry about eating too much meat, because its a renewable resource so we wont run out of it.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
i think that this is a bad article because it says how fertilizing corn is bad and all but yet us farmers need it to make money. The whole pig deal….it is going to affect alot of pig farmers
August 28th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Well franken i didnt like this article. i dont think we should go all organic. we need to think of the animals and what they go through when they get sick.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
This guy sits here and criticizes the farm industry on everything. Itl make you fat, its getting way to expensive, all this bla bla bla. I garuntee this guy is 300 pounds sitting at his desk making this article while enjoying a tasty double quarter pounder with cheese. If only he knew hes making mcdonalds and all his favorite places to eat look bad. If you notice at the beginning of the article he makes it sound like its cruelty to animals because there so close together and makes it sound very unhealthy to be or live near this. Guess what Mr. Author! pigs get slaughtered and turned into food, they die it happens! So dont sit and make farmers and other people look bad. As far as the unhealthy environment there is one simple solution. Do something about it. Try knew ways to clean up the mess. Dont complain and make the agriculture industry look bad. So next time you drive your Mercedes to work maybe you should think of going to a farm and see what actually happens.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
This artical was about framers wanting to rise healthier animals and aviod antibotics. Which is stupid because animals will be sick and they probaly won’t even make it to the market.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
i thnk this article is horrible because, what they are saying is they want us to be vegitarians. the other reason that they are saying that corn thatis givin to the cows is organic to but we spray the corn to. i think this is a bad idea
August 28th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I felt that it was a very confusing article.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I thought that this article was very boring and i didnt learn anything. The only thing they talked about in this article how bad our food is if it is not organic. I think that is a bunch of junk that they want more organic food to be heathier.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Eat beef.. stay healthy… got milk.mooooooo
August 28th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
i think that this guy is a idiot. he obviously doesnt understand the work behind this. he just is a lazy guy.. i found the article confusing and not real sure why the guy wasted his time writing it. he just is an idiot.. he could easily go without meat if he has a problem.. not just whine about it.. this just would ruin the farming industry.. especially in south dakota because that is a huge part of the economy and the way of life.. bad article
August 28th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
I think this guy is a major flamer. He can’t criticize farmers for the way they do things if its bringin home the benjamins. Maybe the way the livestock is treated is a little inhumane…but the point of livestock is to be bought, raised and fed, and sold for money. Not to mention supply food for most of the continental U.S.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
this article was very educating n It tells you a lot. I think this article was also confusing.t about how what foods make you sick. Like peanuts made 8 people die and at least 600 people sick.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
I was all his opinnion but alot of it was true, althou he did make it sound like it was the worst outcomes and situations. It states a good point about our food that most ppl dont understand where our food actually comes from. But as americans all ways in a hurry im sure we’ll never ever stop eating low cost foods.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
i really didnt like it because they only talked about vegetarians and i love to eat meat so i dont really think that this article applied to me
August 28th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
This article was interesting to read. It is sad that animals have to be treated like that just for someone to get a hamburger. In reality it almost has to be done to feed
America’s 300 million inhabitants. It is also sad to hear that so much feritlizer and inorganic waste pollutes our rivers and streams. Perhaps in the future all these problems will be solved. Only you can prevent forest fires.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Although I agree with some aspects of the article, I didn’t like it as a whole. It portrays farms as bad and almost abusive to animals. Not all farms are this way. The more industrialized farms do need to rethink what they are doing, yes, because they are treating their animals harshly, but classifying these as just farms puts the little farms in there too and they aren’t all doing the same things as the bigger guys. Also, the “bad” food isn’t the only cause of America’s obesity problem. Some people are just plain lazy and make bad eating choices. We need to teach them to make better exercising choices and teach them how to get into a better eating habit.
I do think this article will make a few people think about how they do things on their farms, though, and maybe some change will take place.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
This article is extremely informative on how damaging farming for purely monetary gain is dangerous to both the planet and the animals that are raised for food. These animals are raised in conditions that would horrify any decent human being. I don’t like that this article focuses so much on cost. I think it should work harder on persuading people to want organic food by working on their conscience and not their wallet. It’s horrible to keep animals this way.
August 28th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
I liked the article. They were a little biased when refering to meat but could do better in writing it. They stated quite
August 28th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
i didn’t like this article. the guy that wrote this is a vegan and is trying to get everyone else to be a vegan to. he only talks about how bad meat is and cruelty to animals. he’s to picky and critical.
August 28th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
I think this article was messed up. It would be very hard to go organic. Plus organic is more expensive. IT would be hard to go vegan or vegetarian or anything. i don’t think people should be denied meat cause it GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDD!
August 28th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
This article was very long. It got kind of boring after awhile. But I think it is horribile about how they raise chickens and pigs so close together. It is so mean to all of the animals. So I agree with that part of the article.
August 28th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
I like the article. I thought it was a little biased against meat. I agree that american Ag should be careful with their waste and chemicals and manage them better. Some people eat only organic foods and if all of america started that, the farmers of today would be in trouble.

this artical is an example of what is happening to much of journilism today. it its long on opinion, and feel good concepts, with little regard to facts and truths. this pursuit always takes us down some rabbit trail, causing much waste in time and resources, causing real concerns to be overlooked, ignored, or at the very least postponed. ones primary goal should be the pursuit of truth in all areas of life. gather all the legitament info. that you can and make a wise informed desicion. ps wish i had spell check
